Difficulty: Easy to moderate. The smooth, wide multi-use trail at the beginning is easy and gently slopes upward. The woodland trail to the summit of the mountain is steeper with more varied footing (roots and rocks).

How to get there: Drive into Lincolnville and turn onto ME-173 N or Beach Road. Drive 2.2 miles and turn left onto Youngtown Road. Drive 0.1 mile. The parking lot is marked by a large wooden sign on the left. The multi-use trail starts from the parking lot. Hike 1.2 miles on the multi-use trail to the Bald Rock Trail. Travel on that footpath for 0.5 mile to the summit of Bald Mountain.

Information:  Though Bald Rock Mountain is one of the tallest mountains in Camden Hills State Park, the trail to its top is gradual and great for groups and families. At about 1,100 feet, the open summit offers great views overlooking Penobscot Bay. The mountain is not only beautiful in the summer, it’s a great hike during all seasons, especially in the winter. Dogs are allowed if on a leash. Pay a small fee at the entrance ($2 for Maine residents, 12 and older; $3 for non-residents, 12 and older; and $1 for children younger than 12 and people 65 and older).

Personal note: The trails that stem from the multi-use trail are popular, so you’ll usually pass by fellow hikers and dog walkers in the summer. For many people in the area, Bald Rock Mountain is a personal favorite.
