One of my favorite places to walk in the Bangor area, Essex Woods, has undergone quite a facelift in the past couple of weeks! The path on one side of the bog has been widened, smoothed and lined with rocks to keep down encroaching vegetation, making it a great route for wheelchairs and strollers. It’s such a great opportunity for people with mobility issues to go see some local wildlife.
Also, when I went to check it all out on Monday, I noticed that a new trail map and trail signs had been erected.
Walking from the trailhead at the corner of Jennifer Lane and Garden Way (near the Bangor Mall) I managed to catch site of quite a few birds right away while walking on the widened path. Many of these birds were lingering where construction had been going on for some reason. Maybe some food had been stirred up?
Below are some photos I took while on my short walk at about 3:30 p.m.:
- Adult male cardinal
- Female hairy woodpecker
- Yellow-rumped warbler

- A great blue heron flying away from me. Guess I’m not as quiet as I thought…
