On the day that President Barack Obama signed the order creating the 87,563-acre Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument — Wednesday, Aug. 24 — I was assigned by my editors at the BDN to travel north and explore the new national monument by mountain bike with BDN photojournalist Gabor Degre.
Here’s the resulting video, much of which I shot on my GoPro camera, which was strapped to my helmet:
I also wrote a story about the trip. To read the story, click here.
A few photos I snapped with my phone while there:
- I look confused, but I’m not, I promise.
- A sign at the north entrance.
- A beaver dam and lodge by the road leading to Haskell Gate
- Haskell Hut
- The view from Haskell Hutt
- Haskell Rock Pitch (and Gabor)
- Haskell Rock Pitch
- A cool rock by Haskell Rock Pitch
- Haskell Rock Pitch farther down river, with Bald Mountain (one of the many in Maine) in the distance.
